Wtf is sustainability?

Wtf is sustainability?

Hey there, welcome to the first ever edition of floppydip, where I will keep you up to date with all the sustainable and ethical things happening in the world.

For a quick intro:

  • Sustainable - environmental impact

  • Ethical - human impact

Why should I care?

  • Earth is running out of natural resources (under 50 years of gas/oil left and under 100 for coal)

  • Weather is messed up (you may have noticed but impacts animals and you)

  • Poverty & displacement (as a society we need to do better for those of us not born in richer countries)

You don’t need to become a tree hugging hippie to care about these things but we can do small things to help. This newsletter will mostly be about the business side, I will release a newsletter every Monday and it will never be more than a 5 minute read.

Luxury brands that are sustainable:

  • Stella McCartney - has never used any animal furs/skins/feathers ever! Sustainable and ethical OG

  • Chloé - has 4 big pillars of sustainable and ethical commitments

  • Gucci - launched a new collection “Gucci off the grid” with all recycled materials

  • Rolex - sponsors a bunch of sustainable projects

Rolex - the secret sustainable brand

Did you know Rolex is a non-profit company? I suspect this is in some part to do with tax but technically it is a charity & put’s all its money back into the community. Rolex is better associated with quality and adventure having made watches for over 100 years for explorers, pilots, divers and famously known to last through world wars. There is something special to be said about things that can last a lifetime, ultimately it is sustainable, you buy one watch therefore reducing all the waste created for you individually and the supply chain. Rolex is actually multi-generational, it should last you and whoever you choose to give it to multiple lifetimes. Quality is a key part of sustainability and buying once or for life, will save you a bunch of money in the long run but also reduce waste.

Shopping for quality = good

Shopping for quantity = bad

Happy shopping!
